- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Towards the close of the 18th century some boys were playing ball. The ball got lodged in the gable. One of the boys went up to take it out and he found a little box in a crevice in the wall. On opening it, he found the church plate which was afterwards sent to lord Cork.Tradition says that in one of the many wars waged between the Geraldines and Butlers an earl of Desmond was surprised and besieged at Shanid. The stronghold was impregnable, but the earl's harper admitted the besiegers by a side gate. The traitor had bargained to be made higher(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
