  1. Local Cures
    There were no chemist shops, and not many doctors in former days, but old people had very good remedies.
    The cure for sore eyes, which were blood-shed and painfully irritated was to visit a holy well- such as the Gleebe well. A stye was cured by rubbing your fasting spit to it, also by looking through a marriage ring nine mornings in succession, making the sign of the cross three times. A green rush in the form of a ring was sometimes used instead of a marriage ring. When the sty was ripe pricked with a gooseberry thorn.
