- Baptist's Well.
Baptist's well is in the parish of Castlemahon and is in part of Mr McCarthy's farm in the townland of Cooliska. The pattern day falls on the 29th August and people from several parishes around pay rounds at the well on that day. I heard the following stories from my Grandmother,Mrs Ml Kenrick. She lives in the parish of Castlemahon, and in the townland of Garryduff. She is 89 years old.
Once there was a child cured of sore eyes. She went to the well with her Grandmother and paid three rounds. The child saw three blessed fish swimming in the well at the moment her sight was restored. This is another legend about the well:-
The well was originally on the roadside. Tradition says that a certain man was passing by. He sat down by the well and desecrated the water by washing his feet in it. Suddenly the well changed its position into the field near by and it is there ever since. Here is another legend:-
There is a tree growing over the well and legend says if you put some of the wood of it in the fire it would never burn.
