- Marriages in the olden times.
Marriages in olden days were usually celebrated in the evening and in the home of the bride. People did not like to get married on a Friday or Monday nor during the month of May. Uninvited guests, gaily dressed and wearing belts & hats of straw came to the wedding party and danced and enjoyed themselves. These were known as "Strawboys". The bridal pair remained at the bride's home for a couple of days after the wedding. Then the 'hauling home' took place, when the groom and the wedding party took the bride to her new home, where another big party took place. The bride's dowry was usually given in stock, so many cows etc.- Bailitheoir
