- There were many shops in the village long ago. Most of them were public-houses where porter and whiskey etc. were sold at a very cheap price. There were also some hucksters', shops there where groceries and hardwear and second-hand clothes, etc. were sold. Sometimes liquor was given in exchange for labour which is still done. Buying and selling was and is carried on on a large scale after mass. Pedlars visited the district often in olden times and exchanged small articles such as studs, pins combs and racks for rags, which were used for paper-making and for hair which was used for brush and mat making.
