- The old houses were of a similiar type to those of the present day. Most of them were thatched but there also were many slated dwellings. The thatch was got from straw and the slate from the quarries. Sometimes the house consisted of only one room which served as dining room, kitchen, and bedroom. Only mud-floors were then to be seen. Half-doors were always used and they are still used. Coal was unknown in those times and turf and wood served as fuel. Candles and rushlights were used for giving light, at night.
