Ar an leathanach seo

  1. There are two forges in the parish. One at Castletown and the other a Ballycahane. The blacksmith who works in the forge at Castletown is Mr Hourigan and the smith that works in forge at Ballycahane is Mr Downes. The forge at Castletown was started by the present man's grandfather.
The forges are situated on the roadside and beside a running stream.
The Castletown forge is a large one with a thatched roof and the top of the door is arched. There is one fireplace in the forge and there is a big bellows which is worked with a long shaft. The bellows was not made locally.
The implements the smith uses are the anvil, the sledge, the rasp, the knife, the hammer, the pincers, the tongs, the punch and the chisel.
The smith shoes horses, ponies and asses. He makes ploughs also.
The shoeing of wheels is done in the open air. The band of the wheel is first turned and welded to the right size.
It is then put into the fire and heated. (When iron is heated it expands)
