village in the west of Limerick there was a meeting house. All the neighbourhood congregated here to play cards and talk on current affairs. Three men were sitting at the fire one night when the subject of gold was brought up. One said he heard his father sat there was gold at the end of a neighbour's garden. The others nodded their heads in assent. They came to the conclusions that on a certain night they would make a bold bid to wrest it from it's ghostly guardians.
They arrived at the man's cottage at 12.30 the following night. He was up and about when they came, but to their utter dismay he refused to accompany them. Having come to the place where the gold was hidden they commenced to dig. Having filled one bag with clay they took a rest. 'Twas put in bags because it was believed that the fairies would otherwise throw the earth back again into the hole. When about to restart work they were horrified to see a fierce bull charging them. They caught up the bag between them but finding it too laborious to carry they flung it in the gate of their friend's yard. The bull ceased to continue the chase.
