It is said that a woman who was living in Emly went out one night at twelve o'clock to spread out clothes and she heard noise outside in Emly Churchyard. She went in home again and told the neighbours what she heard. When they came out int the morning they found a well and the named it after the patron saint of Emly who is St Abbies.
