I may remark that Limerick is proverbial for this kind of vandalism, and we have only to refer for an example, to that once beautiful and sacred building, Manister Abbey, the stones of which were used to build Abbeyville, Manister House, the Mill and Village.
I cannot find it mentioned in any historical or archaeological work. O'Donovan and Westrop did not seem to know of its existence, though both mention the old church, 1203; graveyard and St. Senan's Well, all situated only 400 yards south-east of it.
This district, as far as the Shannon was under the spiritual jurisdiction of St. Senan of Scattery Island, on the Shannon, who died in 560 and Mr. Riordan, who is highly intelligent, and about 70 years of age, informed me that no one ever interviewed him on the subject, which certainly they would do if they had seen or knew about it.
Westrop states that - "Asail was brother to Angus, the founder of Dunangus, in Aranmore Island, Galway Bay - stated to be the finest prehistoric monument in Europe." Therefore there is a resaonable supposition that Asail was the founder of this caher.
Westropp mentions four forts, viz., Drumasail, Lid-Asail, Aenagh-Aail and Sid-Magh
