    in the kitchen also.
    The fire was on the hearth. There were no grates, but now nearly ever house here has a grate in the kitchen.
    There were two big hobs, one on each side of the fire-place, in some houses, and in most cases a hole was made in the wall of the hob. The pipe belonging to the man of the house, or the woman's snuff-box usually reposed on this hole in the wall. A salt box was seen hanging near the fire-place also, sometimes a Canister of tea was kept there.
    A clothes line often was seen near the fireplace. Socks & stockings were hung on it
    The crane-crook is seen in every house now, but in olden times a chain, suspended from a hook in the centre of the chimney served as a crook, on which to hang a pot or kettle.
