- So abundant was the potato crop, before the Famine, that the people had absolutely no regard for them. Cartloads of them were thrown into dykes to get rid of them.
In the townland of Ballinvery there was a farmer named James Farrell who profited by this abundant crop, as he got loads and loads of potatoes from the surrounding neighbours for practically nothing, and fed them to a great number of pigs.
Such was the early promise of the potato crop during the famine year . - that James Farrell anticipated another abundant crop and in consequence he again expected to get potatoes as he had got them the previous year.
