On another occasion General ? and his man William Shanahan got turned over during a hard gale and coming from Mount-Shannon. General ? clung on to the upturned boat and the other man went to swim ashore and got drowned. Two men from Castle-Lough named Sheridan and McGrath saw the wrecked boat and went to the rescue as quickly as possible. They saved the General and brought him home.
There were not many burnings in this part of the country except in the troubled times when thre were some houses burned by the Black and Tans as reprisals. Mrs Carrolls or Newtown, Mr Gleeson's of the Quarry and Mr. Kennedy's of Coum but the Black and Tans failed to burn Cloneybrien house. They threw four bombs(continues on next page)
