    articles of furniture taken out of the dwelling houses, from beneath the eyes of their owners, also were powerless to save them. Terror reigned in all the adjoining districts also, old women waded and prayed, and were heard to predict that the end of the world was coming. The roar of the water could be heard many miles away.
    When the flood reached Newport bridge it was at its culminating point. The sight which it presented at this place, was strange beyond imagination, it had reached such an extraordinary height trees, live animals, sewing machines and various other things - animate and inanimate - too numerouos to mention, could be seen floating on to destruction. The bridge shook beneath its weight and a huge dent was made in the central arch. The flood subsides about evening, but normal conditions were not restored for many days.
    When the flood had ceased and things became normal, it was noticed that the river had changed its course in various places. The bridge at Newport was then regarded as a considerable source of danger and anyone carrying a load, weighing more than a ton was warned by notice boards, which were displayed at both side of
