“Forty years ago the young lads living around Mullinahone made pop-guns.”
Forty years ago the young lads living around Mullinahone made pop-guns. From their making and firing much innocent fun was derived. The pop-guns were made as follows - Straight pieces of the elder tree were cut about nine inches long. This particular wood is full of pith or soft stuff in the centre. This pith is carved out by means of a small round piece of tin. Iron like strong wire was next put into the fire and reddened. Then it was farced through the piece of wood leaving a nice round hole right through the piece of wood lengthwise. When the whole was made big enough, a piece of stick was made to fit the hole.
