- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)purchased his coal in Tipperary town. It was a very long journey to this man's house in the County Limerick. Just after he had left the town it began to snow and it snowed all day long. The kind parson fearing that he would be held in the snow, sent out help to meet him and help was never more needed for after three miles travelling in the blinding snow they found him foundered on the roadside. They unharnessed his horses and never had more to do to bring the animals to the parson's house. There he had to remain for three days because there was a terrible fall of snow. He got free food for himself and for his horses.
He was known to travel the longest journeys of any carman. On another occasion he was homeward bound from the same house and was passing through Tipperary when one of his best horses known as big "Poll" fell sick and died on the street. He found the horse a great loss because thirty curt. was only his medium load. This man often told the story of his last adventure which was a sad one.
One of his comrades, Dalton, lost his life when the three were coming home from Old Palace late on a Saturday night. Burke was leading, Dalton was second and they were asleep in their cars. Power was some distance behind coming through the bog road at a place called "White Vein". Dalton's horse turned in to drink water at a bog hole and capsized the horse car and all, and the poor man was drowned. Power came along and passed the spot without seeing him and came home and never missed him till he was got on Sunday morning and the horse and man dead.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
