This is how I saw furze chopped by a man who had no machine.
A kind of box about 2 feet square made of larch poles about 2 inches in diameter and undressed was sunk in the ground and flush with the surface. It was about 1 foot in depth. The young furze was packed into this and chopped by a knife called a furze knife.Irish Terms
