Baylough is situated in the middle of the Knockmealdown Mts. Many legends are told in connection with this lake.
It was said that people came from Clogheen to drain this lake and they saw as they thought Clogheen on fire. They ran to extinguish the fire but on arrival no fire was to be seen. This showed them that there must be some enchantment about this lake and they did not interfere with it again.

    (II)
It is said that there was a woman near this lake, called "Petticoat Loose" and she was supposed to kill people passing by. She was banished out to the Red lea (?) and compelled to make a rope of the sand there and also to drain the sea with a bottomless thimble.
