When people were arranging a marriage some of the brides friends used to go to the man's house. they used to bring a bottle of whiskey.
When they reached the house, they sat around the fire and had each a drink of whiskey. Then the match was introduced and the consent of the father and mother asked.
They would also settle the dowry. Perhaps the bride's people would not be giving what the bridegroom wanted then they would split the difference, and decide the date for the marriage.
After the marriage all guests used to return to the bride's house and have a dinner and a dance.
For the dinner they used to have plenty of boiled potatoes, cabbage, and pigs' heads.- Bailitheoir
