- There was a very old school on the side of the road near Donaskea, Tipperary, not far from where I live.
The school was in a small thatched house. The teacher lived about four miles away, and had to come on horseback.
Every day he stabled his horse in a near by farmer's house.
The boys never took off their caps unless they saw the priest coming, and then they would be thrown in all directions
Slates and books were used for writing on. The work was all in English.
The turf for the winter's fire was piled under the desks.
When the turf for the fire was getting scarce, each child was supposed to bring money or a sod of turf to allow them to get a heat at the fire.
