    the twelfth century. Clare was called Thomond at that time. The King of Thomond had his castle were Knox's house now stands in Clonroad. Ennis Abbey was a great school at one time. The ruins are still to be seen in Abbey St. The river Fergus runs straight through the town. There are many old narrow historic streets and old building around Ennis. The names of the streets are O Connell St, got its name from the monument which commemorates Daniel O Connell's election. The old name for this street was Jail St. Parnell St. got its name from Parnell the famous politican who was responsible for land reform in Ireland in the last century. The old name for this street Mill St. Abbey St. got its name from the Abbey. The old name for this street was Church St for the same reason. There are two monuments and four banks in Ennis.
    It is called in Irish Inis cluain Ramha fhada. The town was on an island long ago and the branch of the river where the Convents and Cinema are now. The name in Irish means the Island meadow of the long rowings. The town grew up around Ennis Abbey founded by the
