- Long ago the people used to make bread out of wheaten flour, oaten meal, barley and rye. They used grind the corn themselves by means of two querns.
These querns were simply a small hand mill composed of two round limestone flags about a foot and a half in diameter and about three inches thick. There used be a round hole in one of the querns and two round holes in the other. The quern with one hole used be left on a tablecloth or on the ground at first. Then the other one used be left down on it. Then an axle used be put down through the two centre holes. Then the grain used be poured in through the other hole and the top quern used be twisted.
