- The people in the parish of Tullaroan looked after the animals on the farm differently than they do now. They fed them differently and their houses were different also.
The cow-houses were the biggest houses on the farmyards and the cows were put in these every night during the winter. These were poles standing upright in the houses with a ring around each of them. There was a cord out of each ring and it was tied to the cow's horns, and the cows could lie down when they liked. Palm was put in the cowhouses to bring the cows luck. People never killed a swallow in a cowhouse because there was a saying that the cows would milk blood that night. Easterwater was sprinkled on calves to bring them luck also.
