- The churn used for making butter long ago were made of wood by the local coopers. They were wide at the bottom and sloped to the top and had a lid which fitted inside.
There was a small circular hole about 6 or 8 inches from the top to the center through which the handle of the dash as it was called and was beaten up and down by hand power. The dash itself was made of two pieces of wood morticed crossways and holes at the end of each arm to allow the cream to pass through in the process of beating.
It took longer in cold weather to make the butter than it did in warm weather- Bailitheoir
