- Long ago shops were not common. There were houses where tobacco and drink were sold on the sly out in the country. Those houses were small, and people would go in for a drink or tobacco. But they would pretend it was in for a fork or a spade they went. There would be someone on the watch all the time to see were there any revenue men coming. those houses were called "shebeens".
Buying and selling were carried on after Mass on Sunday. Men would sell their cattle and horses, and women would sell their linen and flannel.
