In the time of the cholera in Kells a great many people died. So numerous were the deaths that a pit twenty feet deep and the whole width of the churchyard had to be dug in the Protestant Cemetery to receive all the cropses.
There were two carts to bring up the dead bodies. One big square box was used as a common coffin. When the cart's arrived at the pit the tail board was removed and the cart heeled so that the poor remains would fall into the hole. Then a few shovelfuls of clay were thrown on the dead body.
