- Long ago the people of Ireland fed on very plain food. The meals of the poor people consisted chiefly of potatoes and buttermilk three times a day. They drank the buttermilk out of a wooden mug which they called a Noggin. The other class of people fed on boxty bread and tunips. They made the boxty bread out of raw potatoes and flour. They also ate indian porridge along with buttermilk for their supper. They were the principal foods the people of long ago lived on.
