People, long ago, baked as much as did for a week, and always put a cross on the top of the cake. Bread was often baked in front of the fire against an iron stand.
On some particular night, they would bake special cakes in honour of that night, such as Shrove Tuesday, they would bake pan-cakes, or potato cakes.
