- Ned O Reilly is the only thatcher round this district. He is a good thatcher and gets plenty of work to do. When he starts thatching the first thing he does is to pull out the old thatch. He has another man attending him with bundles of straw. He sticks a head of a fork in the thatch to keep up the straw. He makes small handfuls of straw and puts a knot on it and sticks it in with the thatching fork. When he has a piece done he rakes it. Then he gets a couple of buckets of water and throws it on it and flattens it down with a rake. He puts a row of staples and pins them down with rods. These staples are made of hazel rods.
