It is said that the old name of this locality was Lough an Alla - "the lake of the swans." The old school was not far away from this one. It was a mud wall house with a thatched roof built in Mrs. Connoly's field now in the possession of Mrs. Macken.
Before that there was an old school built of branches on the Rickards town road about 50 yards from the present school. A Mr. Seery taught in the school in Connolly's fields.
