Long ago the commonest bread used was oaten bread. The oats was grown on the farm and when this was ground it was made into bread. This was called oaten bread.
There was another kind of bread used which was called boxty bread. The oaten bread was kneaded with water. The old people baked the bread on one day in week and that amount had to do for a whole week. There was a cross cut on the top of each cake to keep it from cracking. Oaten bread was baked long ago before the fire against a support. This support was called a Bread Stick.Máire Áine Ní Lorcháin
