- Long ago teas was never used except at Christmas. People were fined if they were known to have it in their houses as it was considered a stimulant. Their bread was made of Indian meal. They used to mix it with a thing called sowens.
This was made of potatoes a little flour and water. It was kept steeping in a crock and water added to it from time to time.
