  1. Bread
Our modern loaves are very unlike the wholesome home made bread on which our ancestors throve.
Toothache was unkown in olden times because people used a great deal of oaten bread which was good for the teeth.
This oaten bread was made from fine oatmeal wet with water and baked on the hearth or on a griddle. It was often baked in front of the fire, kept upright by an iron support. This bread was very popular and men going off for the day to work in the bog or at hay brought a quarter of this bread with them and a piece of boiled bacon and they made a hearty meal of it. Wheaten bread was also used. People often ground their own meal and flour in a "quern". It was wet with mild and baked in a pot-oven.
