The Great fairs of the year locally are the April and October fairs in Moate, and in Athelone the January horse fair. In Moate the Cattle and sheep fair is held on the first Wednesday of the month and the pig fair on the previous day. In October there is a special fair for sheep on the first Tuesday of the month then at that time the pig fair is held on Monday instead of Tuesday.
