Rumour also has it that 'tramps' used this well as a lavatory, thereby defiling the water and as a result of such ill-usage, the well dried up.How the Well got its name:- During the Winter when the Shannon was in flood St. Brigid is alleged to have walked across the river on the water and on arriving on the Leinster bank chose this well and dedicated it. Furthermore it is said that several nuns walked across along with her. One timid nun was supplied with a boat which was carried down the river by the flood and looked as if it would be lost. But St. Brigid prayed for its safety and it landed safely on the Leinster bank quite near this well, which was then called St Brigid's well in memory of the miracle. It is reported that St Brigid performed miracles at this well, but the miracles are unknown.21) Mrs M. McCormack and Mr C.
