- There are very few people around Athlone that do not wear boots or shoes. There are more nowadays than in former times.Clogs are worn very seldom around this district. Clogs were made locally.At the age of fourteen the children began to wear boots in olden times.In the Summer some people walk through a bog bare-footed. This is supposed to take away any corns that people have on their feet.The women put a hot coal in the water that washes their feet to keep the fairies away.People say if your feet begin to sweat to wash them in boiling water every night.
