- Alone I linger by this grey old pile
That stands beside the Shannon's rushing stream
When sombre eve dispels day's joyous smile
And from the cloudless blue pale stars out gleam(?)
Calm sleep the waves that babbled all day long
And gambolled elf-like upon the rush-grown shore
Hushed in the breeze's sigh the warblers' song
And the tall poplars sway their arms no more
The cool still is tainted with the breath
Of noisome weeds that garland every tomb
For in this drear neglected home of death
No roses bright nor modest lilies bloom
Why do I linger this old church beside
Or muse within its gloomy walls awhile?
No trace it bears of skill or art or pride
Like many a stately ruin of our isle
When 'neath its shadow long ago I stood
Ere manhood's care bid boyhood's bliss depart
A mystic icy feeling chilled my blood
A reverential awe enthralled my heart(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
