"cross" the decoration almost invariably took the form of a rosette, made of many coloured ribbon, often but not necessarily, green. There would be little inner rosettes of various other little pieces of ribbon, tinsel etc These would be borne pinned to the shoulder, and were a source of great gratification to the wearers. We could either make those crosses ourselves or buy them ready made at the drapers'. Sometimes the Carrick nuns would make and present them to us. This would be upwards of forty years ago.
"Puss Thursday" was the title given to the last Thursday of Shrove - or Seraft - as it was usually called. On this Thursday, girls who did not get the chance of marrying during the Shrove were supposed to wear a "puss" or pout. This idea had now died out.
