“One early morning as a man was going to a fair the horse which he was taking lost his shoe.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)the town as he had stopped to meet a soldier who insisted on saying that his horse was still lame, offered to mend the horse's hoof. The man gladly availed himself of what seemed to be a splendid opportunity.
The soldier took him to a mountain and and at an opening in the mountainside stopped and signalled to the man to follow him. This the man did and they went through a hall where rows of soldiers could be seen seated on lovely horses. They were bent forward on their saddles and seemed to be asleep.
The man was given a meal in an adjoining room where he could see the soldiers in a big hall. On the table where he was eating, the man noticed a sword in a scabbard and he attempted to take it out. When he did so, however he was surprised to see the men sit up on their saddles.
Hearing that they might kill him if he took the sword out he put it back in the scabbard. Scarcely had he done so when the soldiers who had brought him there appeared and told him his horse and himself were alright but the he (the soldier) and his men were not alright.
