- In olden times people had meals three times a day. Which were breakfast, dinner, and supper.
They had their breakfast at about 9 o'clock and dinner about 1 o'clock, and supper at 7 o'clock when they would leave their work.
Nearly all the people worked before having food.
The breakfast consisted of Porridge and milk which they called "Stirabout", or "Splatter-the-hob." and after that they would have oat-meal bread and milk.
The dinner consisted of potatoes which they called "Spuds" and bacon and cabbage or sometimes potatoes and eggs and a noggin of butter-milk.
The supper consisted of porridge and milk.
Potatoes were not eaten at every meal, they were mostly eaten at dinner.
Milk was drank very much, as it was used instead of tea, butter-milk was chiefly drank at dinner.
People did not sit around a table at all, but I have heard that instead of a table they had a large pot in the centre of the floor, on which they put a flat sort of basket with the potatoes on it.
All the people of the house would sit around it, and peel the potatoes with their fingers, (As there were no knives at that time) They neither used plates(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
