- Our local forge belongs to a man named Jim Mallon. He lives in the townland of Gelsha.
He mends gates, tongs, pots and smoothing irons. He makes horse and ass shoes, shoeings for carts and traps, and many other things.
The forge has a very bad bit of a roof on it. There is only one fire-place in it. The handle of the bellows is like the handle of a shovel. When a person leans on this handle it blows the fire. Whoever goes in to get something done has to blow the fire with this bellows, while the blacksmith is doing the work.
The blacksmith is very black and stooped.
The tools in the forge are hammers, sledges, nails, and many other articles. The blacksmith wears an apron of black leather, to save his trousers from the horses' hoofs.- Bailitheoir
