- Long ago there were no good schools like what there are now. There were only hedge schools. In some places all the school they had was a little hut on a mountain without chimney or window and they had to enter on their hands and knees as the door was so low.
When the master told them to read their lesson they had to go to the door and read because there was no light inside. There was usually only one book for each subject. About eighty years ago priests used to teach in barns and houses. In this district there were a few old schools. The Taaffe's of Legga Cross, the Morris family of Legga the Corcorans of Moyne the Grays of Ballyduffy gave their barns to the "Latin Boys" When the farmer wanted his barn for threshing some other farmer used to give his barn to them.
