    they smelt something unpleasant. At last they saw a flame of fire not far away and it was coming in their direction. So as before they stood behind a tree to let it pass. And as it came near they were aware of a man behind it. And there was a soldier riding a horse with a lamp in his hand and a rifle on his back. One glance told them that he was not of the living class.
    So when he passed they went home and never again did they go hunt in the bog.
