    It is rather strange that so large an area should remain an undefined parcel under the old grants of Hervey de Montgomery and earl Richard (or Strongbow). It was under the proprietorship of the Abbots that the district took its name and developed into what it was, viz; a sheep-walk or pasture for the Abbey (Grange a part of the Saltmills district, the name may be traced to the same source) It is thus that the old inhabitants derive the name.
    Here the flocks belonging to the Abbey were turned to pasture and held in reserve until such time as they were wanted for sale or slaughter. The district is suitable for the raising of sheep.
