Nearly all the houses were thatched with rushes but sometimes they were covered with sods.
The walls were built of yellow mud which was got from yellow mud ditches. In nearly all the houses there was a bed in the kitchen which was wooden, and it served as a seat in the daytime. This bed was known as a settle. The fire place was generally by the end wall. It was built in the wall about two feet up from the ground. It was guarded by an iron door.
Mostly all the windows were made of timber, the reason was because there was a tax on glass windows.
The floors were made of yellow clay. They used to put the clay on the ground(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
