There were four old houses in Gurtins or as it is commonly called the Waste.
There were Dillon's, Hanlon's, Byrne's and Coghlan's. The Dillon's were evicted for non-payment of rent and they went to reside in Scar, and the land is now owned by John Furlong of Gurtins.
The Hanlon's went to America, and this land is in possession of John Furlong also.
The Byrnes died and the land is in possession of John Shuddal of Scurlogue.
The Coghlans lived in the fourth house. With them lived Mrs Nancy Furlong and her son the famous highway man better known as "Harkaway".
It was from this house he was taken prisoner, and this land is in possession of John Shuddal.
There are two old houses in Rochestown, and people named Keating lived in one of them. Those people all died, and the land is now owned by Ned Stafford of Holmanhill.
People by the name of Ryan lived in the other, they went to Wexford
