- There once was an old man going around the neighbourhood known by the name of Johnie Kavanagh. He was travelling around from house to house, and at night he would sit beside the fire telling stories.
He was tormented bu the young folk around, who were always looking for fun. He ate everything he was given, such as, soup, candies, and other things, which are not eaten nowadays.
The children followed him and made cakes of mud, and they put them between two slices of flour cake, and gave them to the old man to see him gobbling this strange food down greedily.
He could tell a great many stories to the people of the house in which he was staying, and the children sat around the fire, there faces glowing with eagerness to hear the tales.
