- There is a tradition in this district in connection with St. Martin's Day. It is said that if the fishermen go out to fish St. Martin will appear to them on a white horse and some tragedy will befall them.
It is believed that St. Martin appeared to some young fishermen who lived in the Faythe Wexford, when they went out to fish on St. Martin's night about 150 years ago. A group of fishermen including young and old men were standing on Wexford Quay when they noticed a large shoal of herrings in the water. The young fishermen said one to the other that they would go out to sea and catch them, but the old fishermen advised them not to go. The young fishermen did not heed their warnings and went their way.
When they had gone to the place where they had seen the shoal of herrings a figure believed to be St. Martin appeared to then riding on a white horses. He warned them and pointed to the harbour but they took no heed of him. He did the same thing the second time but they again took no heed of him. He(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
