- When the smoke comes down the chimney, that is a sign that there is going to be rain. When the sea-birds come up near your house or on land that is a sign of a big storm. When your ear itches you that is a sign that someone is backbiting you. When your nose itches it is a sign that you will get money. When your left hand itches you it is a sign of money. To find a piece of coal and always carry it around with you brings good luck. If a moth flies around you at night, expect a letter.

- It was the practice not to sell milk on the 1st of May to any neighbour. If you did it was said that the buyer would get the profit of your churn. The practice, to my own knowledge exists in Co Wexford to the present day. You could not get as much milk to buy as would whiten your tea on the first day of May. You should procure it the evening before or be without it.
