- During the rising of '98 the Blacksmiths were very important because they forged the pikes with which the Wexford men fought.
At the South of a little village called Carnew there lived a very important man named Mr OConnor Mr OConnor was a blacksmith and his forge was a meeting place for the rebels that lived in Carnew. A man in the neighbourhood who had been spying on him told the English that he was forging the pikes for the rebels. He was captured and cast into prison.
